This unique collection explores the training of artonomous, an artificial artist.

For more than fifteen years, Pindar Van Arman has been teaching painting robots his creative process. He has equipped them with a brush, camera, and dozens of competing A.I. algorithms that vie for creative control of each painting. As they paint, they record each mark, and periodically step back to assess the direction of the artwork. Based on the assessment, the next brush strokes are made, their marks recorded, and the process repeated in a creative feedback loop. In this manner an artwork slowly emerges on the blank canvas.

Kitty Simpson is a photographer who specializes in evocative portraits. For this series, Pindar has teamed up with Kitty to teach artonomous her style. Kitty provides curated portraits for artonomous to study, that it then paints using feedback loops and its array of AI algorithms. These studies are original paintings that represent the robot practicing in Kitty's style. They are numbered in a decimal format the order in which they were painted.

Periodically, artonomous will also attempt to create its own portrait based on the studies. Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Generative Adversarial Networks, it analyzes both the imagery and brush stroke geometry of the studies. It then imagines a unique face based on the patterns it learned, and paints a portrait of it. These original paintings are numbered in a binary format in the order in which they were painted.

This series is a record of artonomous and the progress it is making towards creating fine art portraiture. While Pindar and Kitty are currently closely directing the artwork being created, there will come a point when artonomous is painting completely on its own. Is this even possible and if so when will it happen are some of the concepts being explored in this artistic collaboration.
